The Lost Tribe
Naas Mohammed is not a designer. Or at least, he doesn’t consider himself one.
And yet, his name is affixed to two costumes for The Lost Tribe – Mehtab Bagh for Taj in 2019 and Njagi in 2020 for Anansi, both of which he co-designed with The Lost Tribe Creative Director Valmiki Maharaj.
A communications strategist by profession, Naas’ primary reference for his costumes is his own experience as a masquerader.
He first became involved in costume design when he started playing mas as an individual in 2012. Naas worked with designers to tweak and adjust his own costumes in preparation for Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
It was through that interaction that Valmiki invited him to submit a design for the band’s 2019 presentation.
Naas’ signature is motion – his costumes incorporate elements that emphasise movement and are flattering on a wide range of body types. His point of view as a designer is straightforward – he approaches every costume as a masquerader designing for masqueraders.
