Shawn Dhanraj
Carnival was never the dream for Shawn Dhanraj, it was pageants and bridal and gowns, and he’s managed to take his passion for over-the-top, dramatic design and transform that into an impressive career in costume design.
After just eight short years in the business, he has become one of the most recognisable names in Carnival, with an extensive portfolio of costumes to show for it. Shawn started designing fresh out of high school, starting in 2014 with mas band Fantasy.
Two years later, in 2016, he would design Pretty Mas for The Lost Tribe’s inaugural presentation. Since then, he has designed every single year for The Lost Tribe and added TRIBE, Bliss and Rogue to the list of bands he has worked with. His main inspirations for his designs are his emotions and life experiences, which he finds a way to translate into his costumes.
When it comes to his aesthetic as a designer, Shawn strives to reinvent himself every single year, experimenting with different techniques and materials.
One thing all his creations have in common, though, is that unmistakable quality of ‘overdo’.
