The Lost Tribe

Solange Govia

Solange Govia grew up, not in any singular place, but always surrounded by Carnival.

She played amongst her mother’s Peter Minshall costumes in the living room as a child; her father was a close friend of the prolific mas man.

At college, she studied hospitality and tourism but also took jewellery making and sewing classes. Those skills would come in handy when she designed her first costume for TRIBE’s 2009 presentation Birds of a Feather.

Sol has since held a number of positions within the TRIBE Group, but she is, perhaps, still best known as a designer. She has become a staple designer for TRIBE, Bliss, and Harts and will add Rogue and The Lost Tribe to her repertoire in 2023.

Sol’s first design for The Lost Tribe was a long time coming. Her first foray into design that married traditional mas elements with contemporary design – in the style of The Lost Tribe – was for the film Lavway, when she was challenged to create a Fancy Sailor costume. After that, it would only be a matter of time before The Lost Tribe’s Creative Director, Valmiki Maharaj, called on her to contribute a costume to the band’s 2023 presentation – 202WE.

Solange brings to 202WE, as she does with all her designs, an ode to the female form and impeccable attention to detail.
