The Story
In this classic tale, a humble woodcutter named Ali Baba stumbles upon the secret cache of a ruthless band of thieves. However, his newfound wealth is quickly threatened when the cunning captain of the thieves discovers he has been robbed. Seeking bloody revenge, the captain disguises himself as an innocent oil merchant leading a massive caravan of mules into the city.
He arrives at Ali Baba’s house seeking hospitality, bringing with him thirty-eight massive leather oil jars. To the unsuspecting host, it is just a peddler and his cargo. In reality, the jars hide bloodthirsty thieves waiting for midnight to strike. The merchant persona is a masterclass in deception, representing the hidden dangers, high-stakes espionage, and masquerade lurking within the marketplace.
Inspired by the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Tajir celebrates a different kind of treasure. One found not in gold, but in the hands of those who crossed oceans carrying generations of knowledge, craft and tradition.
Through trade, textiles and entrepreneurship, Syrian migrants wove themselves into the story of Trinidad, creating a legacy that continues to endure. Like the hidden riches of Ali Baba, their greatest contribution was not what they possessed, but what they shared.
